Experts say about 20% of utility bills go to heating water. Hot water heaters are the second biggest energy hog behind the air conditioning system.
An electric tank unit is the most expensive way to heat water. Tankless water heaters fueled by gas are one of the least expensive methods.
Tom Massimin and Kenny Browning are the Hot Water Guys, the leading installers of tankless water heaters in the Houston area. They say tankless units save 50% of the monthly costs of heating water.
Tom Massimin and Kenny Browning are the Hot Water Guys, the leading installers of tankless water heaters in the Houston area. Their company specializes in the installation of tankless water heating systems. They say tankless units save 50% of the monthly costs of heating water.
The Hot Water Guys recently appeared on the Homework Houston radio show. They said that lower energy bills and endless hot water are the two biggest reasons people choose to replace their traditional tank water heater with a more efficient tankless unit.
Tom Massimin said the cost of a tankless unit can be 3 times higher than a tank unit. However, it will last 2.5 times longer. “You’ll replace a tank system 4 times during the life of a tankless unit,” said Massimin.
The National Association of Homebuilders show the average life of a tank system at 10 years. Tankless systems last 20 to 25 years according to the Hot Water Guys.
Proper installation is crucial to a 25 year service life. A condensate collector in the venting system is one of the keys to a proper installation and a long service life. Other aspects include sufficient gas, proper venting, sufficient water pressure and a tankless unit big enough to supply the needs of the homeowner. The Hot Water Guys sell and service all major brands of tankless units.
Energy saving tax credits lower the cost of tankless water heaters. Thirty percent of the tankless installation costs qualify for a tax credit resulting in credits for between $900 and $1000 for most Hot Water Guys customers. The average range for the total installation costs range from $3,000 to $3,500.
When you consider the fact that most Houston hot water heaters are in the attic, you have another good reason to go tankless. The Hot Water Guys field 5 or 6 calls a month from homeowners with leaky water heaters that overflow the drain pan. That can result in big repair bills from water damage. “The water ruins everything on the way down,” said Tom Massimin. “Then the cold water that continues to try to fill that tank keeps on coming.”
